CASC make junior doctor audits available online

The Clinical Audit Support Centre have been working with junior doctors who submitted their clinical audit abstracts as part of our 2010 ‘Junior Doctor Clinical Audit of the Year’ competition to create a new section on our website. CASC appreciate that juniors often struggle to find examples of good audits and quality improvement projects and therefore we have made 30 posters displayed at the Finals Event in Manchester in November 2010 available via the CASC website. We would like to thank all juniors who have submitted their posters and hope that the resource helps inspire others to take part in quality improvement work. To see more, click here.

CASC draft report shows 38% drop in audit jobs

The Clinical Audit Support Centre first published their online clinical audit jobs bulletin in June 2009. We are in the process of reviewing data from all 50 bulletins published to date and we will have two years worth of data at the start of July 2011. Initial draft findings focusing on the 11 like-for-like months from July to May shows that in 2010-11 the number of clinical audit job vacancies advertised on NHS jobs website fell to 105 (from 169 in 2009-10). In addition, the proportion of fixed term positions increased from 17% in 2009-10 to over 37% in 2010-11. We will make further details available in the summer but given the push to reinvigorate local clinical audit these findings make disturbing reading and provide evidence that resources for clinical audit are increasingly being eroded.

NICE call on audit staff to have their say

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is currently conducting an online survey. The purpose of the survey is to invite clinical audit staff to feedback their views on existing NICE tools and to ascertain what further support is required from NICE. The survey incorporates just 11 questions that ask respondents for a mixture of quantitative and qualitative data. According to NICE the survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete and further details can be obtained by clicking here. For information, the survey closes on 13th June.

Call for clinical audit abstracts

Healthcare Events have recently announced details of their 12th annual clinical audit conference. The event will take place at the King’s Fund in London from 7th and 8th February 2012 and is entitled ‘Clinical Audit and Improvement’. As part of the build-up to the conference, Healthcare Events are looking for abstracts to be delivered as either oral presentations or posters at the conference. The deadline for submissions is 20th June 2011 and details of how to submit your abstract can be accessed via either the CASC website or the Healthcare Events website.

CASC providing CQC support to teams

Clinical Audit Support Centre has recently been working to support a number of organisations with CQC registration and compliance. General practices will shortly be providing details of their registered activities to the CQC whilst many other healthcare organisations are now in the compliance phase of the regulatory cycle. Organisations should ensure that their governance and quality assurance systems are fit for purpose so that they can demonstrate compliance with the Essential Standards of Quality and Safety. Support can be provided at a number of levels please contact the CASC team if you would like more information in relation to how we can help you.

Clinical audit no longer a revalidation ‘must do’

The GMC have recently updated their revalidation guidance. The update (available on the GMC website) may disappoint many clinical audit professionals as the new guidance suggests that doctors can choose to participate in either clinical audit, review of clinical outcomes, case review, monitor the effectiveness of a teaching programme or evaluate the impact of a piece of health policy in order to provide evidence of participation in a quality improvement activity. Therefore this suggests that some doctors will be able to choose not to participate in clinical audit work in order to show evidence of their fitness to practice – which is a considerable shift from previous revalidation guidance that stated doctors would have to show evidence of active involvement in clinical audit work.
